Built to Last – Old Lifts And Their Lifespan

At Nationwide Lift Services, we see various types of lifts daily, including platform lifts, goods lifts, and so on. However, something that always catches our eye is old lifts. Many years ago, lifts were built to last , they were manufactured to last a long time and have proved to be efficient, some are even still working properly today.

This lift that we found on site recently was a whopping 55 years old, and it is still running today. This lift was installed by a company who were found in 1934. The lift we found was a spectacle, truly a pinnacle of elevators, it was installed in a bustling retail store in London. Our engineer Craig (who took these pictures) has an eye for old lifts and even had the opportunity to do work on this lift.

Lifts have come a long way since they were invented, and it is exciting to see how they will evolve in the future.

This week, we finished a lift refurbishment project for a college in Staffordshire. The lift was over 30 years old and in desperate need of an electrical and hydraulic upgrade. We needed to ensure the lift was safe and reliable. Before the lift refurbishment, the lift faced continuous breakdowns and long downtime.

What we did on site

Hydraulic Systems Upgraded

During our time working on the lift upgrade, we changed the complete hydraulic system to ensure the lift ran smoothly, safely and more efficient. We replaced the hydraulic tank, pump, valve block, oil and ram seals.

Control Panel Replaced

We replaced the control panel to a more modern and efficient lift control system with LIMAX levelling and great diagnostics for our engineers on site. The lift will now run in a much more reliable manner. All components we replace are open protocol and sourced in the UK.

Lift Door Operator Upgrade

We upgraded the old and unreliable door operator with an L&L operator package ensuring reliability on site for the long term.

He has been with us for three years, originally starting on bespoke installation jobs in London. This week we finished a lift upgrade project for a care home in Liverpool. The lift in question was over 30 years old and in desperate need of an electrical and hydraulic upgrade. We recently installed a new platform lift for a care facility in Litchfield. We removed the old passenger lift on site which was well over 40 years old and replaced this with a new space saving platform lift. The lift is only used for disabled access for the sisters on site at the lovely care home.

Within two weeks, we had removed the old passenger lift, changed the electrical supply, installed a new platform lift and done all the building work. We got great feedback from site who said “The Lift looks fantastic and your engineers were very nice”.

Glass Lift Door Overhaul

During our time working on the lift refurbishment, we upgraded the door operator to an L&L which allowed the doors to run smoothly and more efficiently. We also replaced the lift door locks and rollers, giving the client piece of mind without major upheaval.
