Local College Contract Won by Nationwide Lifts

We’ve started the week on a high note! Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Jamie Tappenden, has secured another new contract with a local college in Staffordshire. This college, located conveniently near our Stoke headquarters, has nine lifts on-site that will now benefit from our expert care.

Over the past few months, Jamie held several productive meetings with the college team. During these discussions, the local college expressed their frustrations with their previous supplier, citing issues like inadequate servicing, poor communication, and persistent problems with their lifts. Fortunately, we stepped in to turn things around. Through Jamie’s dedication, regular communication, and a proactive approach, we earned their trust and their business.

At Nationwide Lift Services, we bring extensive experience as a reputable lift supplier. From passenger lifts to goods lifts, we’ve partnered with colleges both locally and nationwide for years. Our engineers and office staff are highly trained, ensuring reliable service and support at every step. This new partnership with the local college highlights our unwavering commitment to honesty, excellent customer service, and tailored solutions for every client.

We understand how frustrating it can be to deal with malfunctioning lifts or suppliers who don’t deliver. That’s why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we provide bespoke quotes based on your needs, budget, and the current condition of your lifts.

Don’t wait for problems to arise, let us help you stay ahead of the game. Whether you require lift maintenance, repairs, modernisation, or help with LOLER inspections (in collaboration with a trusted third-party company), we’re here to ensure smooth, safe, and reliable lift performance at your local college or other facilities.

inspection

Inspection of your lifts – How we can help with LOLERS

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, also referred to as LOLER, impose strict regulations for the safe operation and use of lifting equipment. Passenger lifts are required to be inspected every six months, while goods lifts need annual inspections. LOLER inspections are mandatory and must be strictly adhered to.

Regulation 9 of LOLER mandates that all lifts used in work activities or daily operations must undergo thorough examinations by a competent and qualified individual at regular intervals. These regulations apply to any lifts or hoists used for lifting people or loads.

If you own lifts or are responsible for their safe operation in a workplace, such as a facilities manager or supervisor, you are considered a ‘duty holder’ under LOLER regulations.

As a ‘duty holder,’ you have a legal obligation to ensure that the lift is thoroughly examined and safe to use. If you own a lift primarily used by the public, this guidance can also help you comply with broader health and safety legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

We have been in the lift industry for over 30 years, and we work closely with a third party insurance company who can complete your LOLER inspections on our behalf, which helps continuity of a high level of service. We have been working with this company for a long time, and we know them as reliable and efficient.

At the end of a LOLER inspection you are given a report of the companies findings, we can help you fix any issues with your lift.

If you want to know more information about LOLER inspections, please read our LOLER page. This will tell you everything you need to know about LOLER examinations.

Please get in contact with us if you are needing help with your LOLER inspections.

west midlands care home

West Midlands Care Home – Case Study

We have recently supplied a lift refurbishment solution in the West Midlands for a new care home client, as their current supplier was 35% more expensive than us. For many years, we have been looking after care homes, the NHS and local councils in Staffordshire, Midlands, and Northwest.

Lifts are essential for care homes but have often been designed with only one lift on site, making reliability of the only lift absolute paramount. We currently look after many lifts in care homes throughout the UK, some as old as 50 years old, that keep running. Unfortunately, some suppliers installed cheap hydraulic and lift control systems from Europe in many of the care homes in the UK. These do not have the lifespan as say an old H&C traction lift would, so the client has to do upgrades within 15 to 20 years. LEIA do advise a control system upgrade after 15 years, so it is worth planning with clients for these upgrades before they become a problem.

The care home in the West Midlands was very dated and very unreliable. A lift refurbishment is a great solution for existing sites as we can typically start within 4 weeks and complete in 1 to 2 weeks dependent on the work. We started this project within 4 weeks and completed all the below work in two weeks, which was half the time other companies had quoted. The client is over the moon and already discussing future lift modernisation work with us.

OUR WORK ON SITE:

Control System

We replaced the lift control system, shaft positioning system, car top controls, car controls, landing controls, position indicators, safety edges and all associated wiring. The lift’s electrical system was 30 years old and very dated and unreliable. This now ensures the lift is reliable and safe.

west midlands care home

Hydraulics

During our time on site, we upgraded all the hydraulic systems (new tank, valve block, pump, and oil), which were old and needed replacing. Now the hydraulics are reliable and work smoothly. Upgraded hydraulics can help reduce the chance of lift breakdowns, make the lift more reliable, improve ride quality and make floor levelling more accurate. Upgrading the hydraulics can also increase the efficiency of the lift and minimise noise at the Care Home.

Door Operator

We upgraded the door operator, as before they were worn and would typically cause the lift to break down. Now the new door operator is working like they are supposed to, efficient and smooth. Door operator upgrades greatly improve your lift reliability, as many breakdowns are lift door related. The refurbished lift at the West Midlands care home has been running well ever since.

Lift Interior

The lift interior had become very dated and tired. We offered a great solution that is modern and in keeping with the care home, client, and new lifts. We replaced the walls with nice grey laminated panels, added new wooden laminate flooring, new LED efficient lighting, new full width mirror and new handrail. In conjunction with the new car controls, it looks like a brand-new lift inside.

COST SAVING IN THE LONG TERM – Old lifts are a lot more likely to breakdown and the older it gets, the more it will breakdown, costing you more money in the long run. If a lift is over 15 years old, we recommend getting your lift refurbished (so does the lift association) as it will reduce the chances of breakdowns and make the lift generally all round better, safer, and more efficient.

More Eco-Friendly – Lift refurbishments are more eco-friendly than a full replacement lift, as you only replace the major components that cause the lift faults. Lift refurbishments are also more cost-effective as instead of paying for an entirely new lift, you pay for key components to be replaced to ensure reliability and safety.

FAST & Minimal Disruption For Your Business – A lift modernisation project can be started within 4 weeks and completed within 1 week. A new lift can be long lead times (16 weeks), 6 weeks on site and cause huge disruption. A modernisation is a great solution in existing and busy buildings as quicker, cheaper and no electrical or building work needed.

West Midlands Care Home Overview

Time it took to complete – 10 working days

Lift Age – Over 30 years old

Project Type – Lift Refurbishment

Engineers who completed the work – Neil and Steve

Lift Interior Upgrades For Your Lift

Picture this: you step into a lift. What is the first thing that captures your attention? The lights? The buttons? Perhaps it’s the impending awkwardness of lift small talk? Or maybe just the mirror. The interior of a lift always catches our eye.

A lift interior captures the personality of the lift. Throughout our 30 years as a reputable lift company, we have refurbished lots of them. A lift refurbishment can improve your lift dramatically, a nice looking interior can be a subject of your customers discussions and make the lift look better.

After all, you want a pristine looking interior that ensures your lift ride is enjoyable. Whether it is your lift or you are in the middle of a busy shopping centre simply grabbing a lift to get to the next floor, a charming looking interior makes a world of difference.

Take this example of a lift refurbishment job we did for a local care home, when we arrived at site we were greeted to an old, bog-standard lift riddled with problems. After working our magic, we turned it into a swanky telephone box.

Lift Refurbishment is an excellent solution to give an old lift a brand-new life. If you are not wanting the hassle of getting a new lift installed, a lift modernisation solution from us is a great idea. All the parts we fit are open protocol and replacements can be sourced from UK suppliers, speeding up delivery in the event of an emergency.

We can offer you lift controller replacements, interior upgrades, hydraulic replacements, door upgrades or new lift doors. We also offer the complete turnkey solution for our clients by offering builders-work and electrical work as part of our package. Furthermore, we can often get your lift fully modernised with a new interior and all components in 4 weeks.

Motor Room

Motor Room in Winter: The Problems

As the winter months approach, it can cause a whole host of problems for lifts. It is important to know how to keep your lift motor room at the right temperature. A lift motor room should ideally be kept at 20 degrees. Chilly weather can lower the temperature, potentially leading to issues such as improper hydraulic fluid consistency. Here are some common problems caused by cold temperatures and how to solve them:

Reduced efficiency of lift components:
Hydraulic systems may experience thickened hydraulic fluid, causing sluggish performance or delayed responses. Electric motors may struggle to start if lubrication becomes less effective in colder temperatures, warming up the motor room is essential.

Increased wear and tear:
Chilly conditions can make oil or grease more viscous, reducing lubrication and increasing wear on gears, bearings, and rollers. Rubber or plastic parts may become brittle, leading to cracking.

Electrical problems:
Fluctuating temperatures can cause condensation on electrical components, increasing the risk of short circuits or corrosion. Battery performance or capacity may also decrease in cold conditions. Keeping the motor room at 20 degrees is important.

Control system failures:
Temperature-sensitive electronics in modern lifts may malfunction if the ambient temperature drops below their operational range. Sensors and relays may fail, resulting in miscommunication or false error signals.

Health and safety risks:
Lift engineers may struggle to work in a cold motor room, impacting the quality of repairs or routine checks. Cold-related failures could also lead to lift downtime, inconveniencing users and posing potential safety hazards.

Solutions

  • Install air con systems to maintain a consistent temperature in the motor room (ideally 20c).
  • Ensure the motor room has the correct air flow and flow to fresh air.
  • Use proper insulation to help stabilise the temperature range.
  • Schedule regular maintenance during colder months to address potential issues proactively.
  • Monitor the environment with temperature and humidity sensors to track the motor room’s climate.

Contact us if you are having any winter related lift issues.

risk assessments

Risk Assessments for your lifts

At Nationwide Lifts, we have been working closely with care homes and the NHS for many years. We understand how important it is to ensure the lifts are reliable and efficient in these critical sectors. We also understand the importance of completed risk assessments.

Often in some older care sector sites, the designers never considered a second lift or stairlift as a backup plan in case the lift went off. Our plan is to ensure we spot the future issues before they occur. Thorough risk assessments frequently help achieve safer working conditions and ensure the lift is safe.

We offer free full risk assessments every year on every site we look after. So we would look at all components and parts to ensure that all upgrades and replacements are done when required. We work closely with clients on this to ensure they have minimal downtime for the lift on site.

In the lift industry, maintenance can be rushed due to low costs that the industry charge, but we try to be different and offer this comprehensive solution. It works, and we help to reduce breakdowns on all sites.

We have worked with some key players of the care industry, delivering them exceptional service, and saving them costs on repairs. If you are a care home manager who gets busy, the last thing we would want is for you to have problems with your lifts.

We understand there are several challenges involved within the care industry. The safety and mobility of residents, many with limited physical abilities, is paramount. We are aware reliability of lifts may be a concern of yours, as efficient lifts are necessary for transporting residents between floors. With our approach to lift maintenance and comprehensive risk assessments, we aim to prevent all future lift issues for your care home.

Frequent lift breakdowns can lead to delays in care, increased risk of accidents, and less independence for residents, something we’re sure you don’t want. Regular and proactive lift maintenance can minimize these difficulties and put you at ease by ensuring that lifts are always in operation, reducing the risk of accidents, and improving the overall efficiency of care delivery. This not only enhances the safety and well-being of residents but also eases the workload of care staff, allowing them to focus more on providing quality care. Please contact us if you are having issues with your lifts.

DMG Trip

DMG and Nationwide’s Trip to Rome

Recently, Nationwide Lift Services had the privilege of joining Shorts Industries on a business trip to Rome for the DMG project. This initiative highlights the Shorts Industries DMG Controller, an innovative solution for lift control known for its high quality, reliable performance, and efficient delivery times. Nationwide is proud to support Shorts Industries in this venture, as we have shared a longstanding partnership that has seen them install over 800 lift controllers over the years.

Representing Nationwide on this trip were Brad Rogers from our sales team and engineers Neil and Craig, who joined Paul Livingstone from Shorts Industries. The Rome visit offered a deep dive into the technical aspects of the DMG Controller, giving our team an opportunity to tour the DMG factory. They engaged with various components of the controllers, analysing their functionality and discussing how these parts come together to form a robust, high-performance lift solution. This hands-on experience expanded their technical expertise and enhanced their practical understanding of lift systems, solidifying Nationwide’s commitment to delivering top-tier lift services.

Beyond the business agenda, the trip provided valuable moments of camaraderie and cultural exchange. Sharing meals and stories in Rome, our team and the representatives from Shorts Industries built stronger connections that are essential for effective collaboration. This partnership is a true reflection of Nationwide’s service approach, and it was great to see this dedication in action.

Overall, the Rome trip was a valuable experience, enabling our team to enhance their knowledge and skills while also fostering our relationship with Shorts Industries. Our managing director Paul Robinson and sales engineer Jamie Tappenden have had nothing but good to say about the trip, Brad, Neil, and Craig enjoyed it too.

Derbyshire Care Home

Derbyshire Care Home – Case Study

In October, we completed a lift refurbishment job for a care home in Derbyshire. For the past 30 years, We have been looking after care homes all around the nation, providing safe and reliable mobility solutions for residents and staff alike. Our commitment to quality and innovation has transformed the way care homes operate, providing tailored lift projects that cater to the unique needs of elderly and disabled individuals.

Nationwide Lift Service’s 24/7 team works closely with care home managers to design, install, and maintain lifts that enhance accessibility and independence. We understand your concerns that lift work can make it more difficult for your residents to move around, but without work being done on your lifts, your lifts are susceptible to breakdowns. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in care, fostering a sense of security and comfort within these vital communities.

The care home in Derbyshire often had issues with their lifts, it was old and would often breakdown. They had bad experiences with past lift companies, and they knew they required an efficient, working lift for their residents and staff. Fortunately, our efforts in upgrading the Derbyshire Care Home’s lift have proven successful.

What we did on site

Hydraulics

During our time on site, we upgraded all the hydraulic systems (new tank, valve block, pump and oil), which were old and needed replacing. Now the hydraulics are reliable and work smoothly. Upgraded hydraulics can help reduce the chance of lift breakdowns, make the lift more reliable, improve ride quality and make floor levelling more accurate. Upgrading the hydraulics can also increase the efficiency of the lift and minimise noise at the Derbyshire Care Home.

Door Operators

We upgraded the door operators, as before they were worn and would typically cause the lift to break down. Now the new door operators are working like they are supposed to, efficient and smooth. Door operator upgrades greatly improve your lift reliability as many breakdowns are lift door related. The refurbished lift at the care home in Derbyshire has been running well ever since.

Benefits Of Getting Your Lift Refurbished

COST SAVING IN THE LONG TERM – Old lifts are a lot more likely to breakdown and the older it gets, the more it will breakdown, costing you more money in the long run. If a lift is over 15 years old, we recommend getting your lift refurbished as it will reduce the chances of breakdowns and make the lift generally all round better.

More Eco-Friendly – Lift refurbishments are more eco-friendly than a full replacement lift as you only replace the major components that cause the lift faults. Lift refurbishments are also more cost-effective as instead of paying for an entirely new lift, you pay for time on site and repair work, saving you money.

FAST & Minimal Disruption For Your Business – A lift modernisation project can be started within 4 weeks and completed within 1 week. A new lift can be long lead times, 6 weeks on site and cause huge disruption. A modernisation is a great solution in existing and busy buildings.

Derbyshire Care Home Overview

Time it took to complete – 9 working days

Lift Age – Over 25 years old

Project Type – Lift Refurbishment

Engineers who completed the work – Neil and Jay

We feel like this project went well, Jay is a new addition to the company, and he did well with this refurbishment job, learning off Neil, one of our most experienced engineers. Contact us if you are having issues with your lifts.

Port Vale Football Club is based in Staffordshire and is only around 10 minutes away from our head office. It is one of only two English league clubs whose names aren’t taken from a geographical location, with Arsenal being the other.

The History Of Port Vale Football Club

Port Vale was founded in 1876, after a meeting, where the football club took its name. It has a rich history, and they won the football league trophy in 1993. It is a pleasure to have the honour of sponsoring them. Several of our engineers are avid fans of Port Vale, and they regularly attend the matches.

Our Visit To The Stadium

A lot of our loyal customers are based in Staffordshire, and lots of them also attend Port Vale’s games, we hope our board will reach the right people and feed us more business, while giving back to the local community. Sponsorship of Port Vale helps us connect with our community.

Our salesperson Jamie Tappenden paid them a visit and met Oliver Hickman, we looked around the stadium, and we enjoyed viewing the stadium.

While we have completed lift projects for numerous local care homes, private hospitals, and colleges, we also provide services across the UK. If you have any issues with your lifts, please contact us so we can assist you. We aim to respond within 24 hours. Our office number is 01782 562000, or you can email us at info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk.

Dedicated Engineer

Dedicated Engineer on a Major Project

Nationwide Lift Services are thrilled to share some exciting news about a major project we’re currently undertaking! We’re collaborating with a prominent high street retailer to upgrade the lift communication systems in approximately 80 of their stores across the nation. Our success in this project is thanks to the hard work of our dedicated engineer team.

With the upcoming BT digital switch, it’s crucial to ensure all lifts are future-ready. To achieve this, we’re installing GSM units, which will keep everything running smoothly and in compliance with the new regulations. Our dedicated engineer is tirelessly travelling across the UK to complete these installations, ensuring each lift is prepared for the significant digital transition. A dedicated engineer truly makes a difference.

This project is a fantastic opportunity for us, and we’re proud to help our clients stay ahead of the curve. By upgrading to GSM units, we’re guaranteeing that their lifts will have reliable, digital connections. This means that emergency calls can be made without any issues once the switch takes place.

We want to give a big shoutout to our dedicated engineer and the entire team who are making this happen. Their hard work and dedication are prime examples of the commitment we have at Nationwide Lift Services to provide essential solutions and support for our clients. This project not only highlights our technical expertise but also our dedication to customer satisfaction and safety.

Old Lift

Old Lift Map or Treasure? That is the Question.

One of our engineers recently discovered what appeared to be a treasure map, sparking a lot of curiosity. Could this map lead to ancient, hidden treasures? Or perhaps to an underground city lost in time? As it turns out, this intriguing find was actually a planning map for a lift installed in 1970—making it an impressive 54 years old. The lift was originally installed by Bennie Lifts Limited, a company founded in 1934, which has since gone into liquidation. This old lift map has quite a history.

Finding this old lift map was fascinating; it looked like something straight out of a pirate movie! But it’s just one of the many interesting things we’ve come across during our years of repairing lifts.

In over 30 years of service, we’ve worked on hundreds of lifts, both old and new, and encountered all sorts of unusual sights—like lift pits filled with cutlery (they certainly had to “fork” out for that!) or vintage lift maps. Through it all, we’ve maintained our commitment to providing excellent customer service and focusing on fixing issues on the first visit to save you money on repairs. Among the most intriguing finds was the old lift map.

We also offer traditional lift maintenance, where our engineers spend extra time on site, thoroughly inspecting for both minor and major issues, helping to prevent costly future repairs. Our team has seen a variety of lift maps, some quite old.

If you have an old lift, we recommend a lift modernisation. Feel free to keep the old lift map somewhere! We would love to see it.

If you manage care homes, schools, colleges, or NHS facilities and find yourself dealing with frequent lift issues, reach out to us. We have extensive experience working with both large care home groups and individual homes, so you’re in safe hands with us as your lift service provider. We understand the critical importance of reliable lift operation for your staff, residents, and visitors, and we are dedicated to keeping your lifts running smoothly while minimising costs. If you happen to find an old lift map in your facility, let us know!

New Vic Theatre

New Vic Theatre – Case Study

In September we completed a lift refurbishment project for New Vic Theatre, a theatre located in the heart of Newcastle under Lyme where imagination becomes reality, there are regular performances here and is one of the country’s most successful producing theatres. it was opened in 1986 and recently became the first building-based theatre company outside London to become a National Theatre Studio Affiliate.

New Vic Theatre engages 150,000 people every year and people travel far to see the performances and shows. They deliver a programme of international-class work made with local audiences in mind, complemented by an award-winning community programme, and education work which reach around 25,000 people of all ages every year.

New Vic Theatre used to have a lot of issues with their lifts, it was often unreliable and issues with it were regular, the parts were obselete with the company who installed them not existing anymore, it was inefficient and used a lot of energy. New Vic Struggled to find a lift company they could count on, they didn’t know how to get the lift fixed, however Nationwide Lift Services had a solution.

When we arrived at New Vic Theatre, we noticed the issues with the lift immediately and our engineers worked hard to get the lift right

We did a survey of the site and we met the manager and we agreed that a lift refurbishment would be the way to go, we agreed this as the lift was old and was bound to keep going wrong.

New Vic Theatre Lift

What we did on site

During our time working on the lift refurbishment, we upgraded hydraulic systems, this was because they were old and dated, now the hydraulic systems are brand new and work efficently. Upgraded hydraulics can help reduce the chance of lift breakdown, make the lift more reliable, improve ride quality and make floor levelling more accurate. Upgrading the hydraulics can also increase the effiency of the lift and minimise noise.

We replaced the control panel as it was outdated and was causing the lift issues, now the control panel is working more efficiently. the latest control panels offer increased reliability; with fewer faults, the operating time will increase. The new electronic systems we installed, which will do a better job at handling the acceleration and braking. the lift is also now less noisy and doesn’t use up as much energy, making it more eco friendly.

Before and After

The first image is before the refurbishment and the second is after all of our work

Benefits Of Getting Your Lift Refurbished

Saving money in the long run – Old lifts are a lot more likely to breakdown and the older it gets the more it will breakdown, costing you more money in the long run. if a lift is over 15 years old we recommend getting your lift refurbished as it will reduce the chances of breakdowns and make the lift generally all round better.

More eco friendly – Lift refurbishments are more eco friendly as the lift stays in the building but the parts are replaced or upgraded, rather than taking the whole lift out. Lift refurbishments are also more cost effective as instead of paying for an entirely new you, you pay for time on site and repair work, saving you money.

Minimal Disruption For Your Business – This type of lift project causes little disruption, instead of dealing with the hassle of taking the lift out and putting a new one in, we simply replace the parts, this doesn’t take as long and causes a lot less disruption to your business.

Quick to install – We can normally get a lift upgrade installed within a week, parts normally take around 3 weeks from when we order them. typically a new lift can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

New Vic Theatre Overview

Time it took to complete – 7 working days

Lift Age – Over 30 years old

Our engineers, Neil and Steve did an amazing job throughout this project and thank you to New Vic Theatre for using us. they have been patient and good with us start to finish. Neil and Steve also enjoyed a cup of tea whilst on their site. We hope for more business off them in the future and we thank them for having us.

Next Generation of Lift Experts – Why Investing In Staff Is A Must

At Nationwide Lift Services we are a firm believer in empowering the next generation of lift experts, training them up and investing in them so they can reach their full potential. We don’t believe leaving them to their own tools is right, so the young guns who work for us do training as part of their role (in which they get paid for). The results have been clear to us, they have been hungry to learn and expand their knowledge, learning from other staff and our engineers.

The next generation of lift experts have great potential to thrive and be masters of the lift industry, we pride ourselves with training our staff up and watching them excel in their roles, we cannot wait to see how far they will go.

On the job training can sculpt a brand new employee, who may not have a clue about the ins and outs of the industry to a master of all things lifts, the key is patience and high quality training material.

Benefits of on the job training:

  • Real life examples and learning from more experienced employees
  • Faster adaptation to the job
  • Perform simple job tasks from the beginning of your career
  • Good and loyal employees who are more likely to stay
  • Attract the right type of employee

At Nationwide Lift Services, we firmly believe in hiring the next generation of geniuses, training them and watching their skills grow, we have some amazing examples of our young staff here are some below.

Tamzin, who is our newest employee is 21, she has only been with us for a few weeks and she is flying through work like a hawk and has been keen to learn the ins and outs of the lift industry. She is learning the repairs side of the business from our sales manager Brad and she is excelling in her work. Before working here she was at university and had a few jobs prior to this, but this is her first time working for the lift industry.

Daniel, who is part of our sales team is only 16 and has been doing well, he is brand new into the lift industry and has only been with us for a month (this is also his first job). he is learning the sales side of the business and has been learning from our longterm employees. In the short time he has been with Nationwide Lift Services, he has completed several training courses, done hours of research and put the work in, as well as winning us new business. a prime example of what the next generation is capable of.

Michael, who is in charge of the website, marketing and social media only recently turned 20 and has been with the company for just over 7 months, however he has been doing work in the background for us for longer than this. He has been making websites since a teenager and has always had a strong motivation for work. Before going onto looking after the website full time, he did sales/lead generation for a while. During his time with us he has made vast improvements to the website and social media and has 3 marketing qualifications under his belt, as well as winning us new business from the website.

Organizations with a strong onboarding process improve new-hire retention by 82%. It also increases productivity by 70%. Implementing on the job training has been proven to prevent a high employee turnover.

breakdowns

Breakdowns Of A Lift – The Causes and Solutions

A Lift Breakdown is where a lift abruptly stops working, the cause of this may be human error (like overloading the lift, overuse etc) or faults with the machinery or controls. A lift breakdown is a major problem as it can disrupt businesses, interrupt daily routines and cause other hosts of problems, especially in industries and buildings where a working lift is paramount, like care homes or hospitals.

Unfortunately there is always a looming chance of a lift breakdown happening. At Nationwide Lift Services our goal is to cut down the chance of a lift breakdown occuring to as little as possible, and when a lift breakdown occurs, we know how to deal with it and we aim to sort it as soon as possible.

We have handled lifts breaking down for 30+ years, so by choosing us to fix your lift you are in good hands. We always get to site in excellent timing and we work around the clock to ensure we fix the lift on the first site visit.

Common causes of lift breakdowns

Door Malfunctions – over half of lift breakdowns are caused by door malfunctions so making sure the lift doors are working and in good condition is important. the cause of door malfunctions can range from worn out rollers, faulty sensors or broken locks. To prevent these issues, we come on site and thoroughly clean the door tracks and make sure this is done regularly, we look at the sensors, making sure they are clear and not faulty or damaged and we also lubricate any moving parts, making sure they arent stiff or worn. If the doors bang together harshly, take longer or quicker than normal to open/close or squeak, you should get a lift maintenance visit scheduled.

Electrical Faults – electrical faults (such as power outages, faulty wiring and control system issues) are a frequent contributer to lift breakdowns, signs of electrical failures can include lifts not responding, any sort of unusual, out of the ordinary noises, and erratic lift behaviour. To fix this we come on site and check electrical components and wiring, reducing the risk of electrical failures which makes the chance of a lift breakdown less likely. Pay attention to the noise levels, get someone to go in the lift and record, then watch it back and listen for louder sound than normal, listen for any banging, scratching or scraping sounds, any unusual noise is a problem and you should call us so we can sort the issues before they cause a breakdown.

Lift maintenance and its role in preventing lift breakdowns

A lift maintenance is when an engineer visits a site to investigate the lift, this may be for problems or just a general check to ensure the lift is safe and works properly. you should have regular lift maintenance visits. During a lift maintenance visit an experienced engineer will throughly inspect the lift, and fix any sort of problem the lift has, this can solve the problems before they become more serious.

With regular lift maintenance it can greatly reduce the chance of a lift breakdown, minimise disruption to your business, meaning your staff will be able to get back to their duties in better time and ultimately save you money. You can read more about lift maintenance in our blog that we posted.

How to prepare for the event of a lift breakdown

When a lift breakdown occurs you need to be prepared, in this event you need to take swift action. our phone line is 24/7 and we aim to get to the breakdown as soon as possible and get the lift working with minimal disruption. Regular lift maintenance and checking it regularly can help prevent a lift breakdown from occurring. Some ways to prepare include.

Getting your lift checked regulary – get all your lifts checked by a qualfied engineer on a regular basis. A passenger lift is required to have 2 maintenance visits per year (1 for a goods lift) we recommend 4 lift maintenance visits (one visit every 3 months) if its regularly used and important for residents or staff (eg. in a care home or hospital) more frequent lift maintenance may be necessary. Getting your lift checked can help you spot problems and set them right before they cause a lift breakdown or entrapment.

Keep spare lift parts available – keep spare parts of the lift somewhere safe (eg. a cupboard or storage unit) so when an engineer visits site it will take them less time to fix the lift, we do not recommend you fix the lift yourself, let an experienced engineer handle it. there are 272 million hours of global downtime yearly for lifts so keeping spare parts can reduce downtime for your business and get things back up and running quicker.

Trap-ins and what to do if you or someone else is trapped in a lift

A trap in is where a person gets stuck in a lift, its rarely like in the movies where the lift just plummets down floors but this can still rarely happen. Entrapment is a very serious problem where serious injury or death can occur, you and the lift company can be held liable if your lift is clearly unsafe, so making sure your lift is safe is important. You can read more about lift regulations here. if you or someone else is trapped in a lift, this is what you should do.

Stay calm, but make noise – a trap-in is a very stressful event but trying to stay calm will help as when help arrives, you can communicate well and get yourself and everyone else out safely. if you cant call for help shout periodically for aid or bang on the elevator walls.

Call emergency services – if you are trapped in the lift, there is a red emergency button, if you press this it will call the lift company responsible for the lift, as well as the emergency services. The lift company must have a working emergency button for any lift that is installed. If the emergency button doesnt work, call 999 off your mobile phone.

Message or call friends or family members – If you have no internet connection, message friends or family members alerting them on the situation and tell them to call 999, you should also give them the address of the building you are in.

Use your phones flashlight – in the event of a breakdown the lights may cut out, if this happens you should use your phones flashlight to locate the buttons on the lift, also put your phones brightness on max. If your phone is out of charge, refer to tip 1 and 2.

Dont attempt to free yourself – things like trying to break the door or attempting to pry it open can only make things worse and we wouldn’t recommend doing this as it can be unsafe and you wouldn’t know where abouts the lift broke down.

Conclusion

A lift breakdown is often a lift stalling, rest assured the occurence of a lift plummeting is rare. At Nationwide Lift Services we take all calls about a lift breakdown very seriously. We have a 24/7 helpline that takes you straight to one of our staff instead of a call centre, meaning we can get to you as quickly as possible.

Maintaining your lift

Maintaining Your Lift – How Often, The Legalities and More

Maintaining Your Lift – An Introduction

Maintaining your lift is important, especially when people use them often. A lift maintenance is when an engineer visits a site to investigate the lift, this may be for a problem or just a general check to make sure the lift is safe and works properly. We can do lift maintenance for you and your company; we have been doing it for over 30 years and we have an array of loyal customers and good clients. Our reliable and efficient engineers are experts in their field and as a well-respected lift company we understand how maintaining your lift is necessary.

We carry out lift maintenance for care homes, colleges, retail companies, private hospitals and other customers, If a lift breakdown occurs you must arrange a lift service visit as soon as possible, we have a 24/7 helpline you can call and we work around the clock to attend site and fix your lift, lift service visits can make the event of a lift breakdown less likely.

The Legalities

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 or LOLER Regulations states that all lifts must be examined and inspected on a regular basis, a qualified engineer must service the lift to make sure it is safe and in line with the regulations. This applies to all types of lifts, including passenger lifts, goods lifts, dumbwaiters, and hoists.

If you fail to service your lift in line with the regulations you can face a fine, prosecution or you plus your company can be taken to court and sued, so maintaining your lift regularly is extremely important. You or the lift company can also be held liable if a lift breaks down or if someone is injured or dies during a trap-in. At Nationwide Lift Services we know that maintaining your lift and making the lift safe, getting it to work at its full potential and getting people out of a trapped lift is paramount.

LOLER Inspections

A LOLER statutory inspection is legally required to assure that your lift is in line with safety standards. A qualified engineer completes a thorough examination of your lift. The engineer will check the lift against safety criteria, which includes:

  • The condition and state of all mechanical and technical parts
  • The level of wear and tear;
  • Compliance with all relevant safety standards;
  • Any potential areas of improvement.

Once this inspection is complete, you will be handed a report detailing the engineer’s findings. If any problems are found on this inspection, you will be advised on what needs to be done to set them right. For a goods lift LOLER inspections are carried out every 12 months while as for a passenger lift it is normally every 6 months. We can help you with LOLER inspections and get you on the right track.

Our Recommendations and Why We Think This

Maintaining your lift is mandatory but how often should it be serviced/maintained? We recommend that you get your lift maintained every 3 months. We believe in being proactive and fixing faults and getting your lift maintained regularly assists in preventing lift breakdowns and trap ins before they happen, this saves money and reduces disruption while also minimizing faults and accidents.

Conclusion

Maintaining your lift is something we specialise in and we cant stress enough that it is important, can save you money plus the grief of a breakdown and prevents faults, accidents, and trap ins.

If you have any issues with your lifts, please contact us so we can assist you. We aim to respond within 24 hours. Our office number is 01782 562000, or you can email us at info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk.

history of lifts

History Of Lifts

The History of lifts is an interesting topic, Lifts are technology the average person uses almost everyday without thinking about it, to put it into numbers there are roughly 325 million elevator trips per day worldwide, that is a lot of lifting and moving people. Whether its in a local care home, a huge shopping centre, your place of work or a college just down the road, lifts are everywhere.

Lifts have been around for centuries and they have an interesting history. The earliest known lift was made in 236 BC by Archimedes in Roman times. back then lifts were made using hemp rope and powered by animals or people; a huge difference to the modern lift. Throughout history, lifts improved as construction and technology advanced, until they became what we see today.

In the pre-industrial era, lifts were very different. In the year 1000, there was a contraption similar to a lift that was used to raise a battering ram to destroy a fortress in Islamic Spain.

In 1743 a passenger lift, called the ‘flying chair’, was made, The lift was installed outside the King Louis XV balcony at the Chateau de Versailles and was operated by hand.

In 1793, the first screw drive lift was created by Ivan Kulibin and installed in the Winter Palace. This marked a significant step in lift history.

In the Industrial Revolution lifts were used in coal mines to move people and large quantities of coal from the cave and to the surface, lifts were moved with string which was considered dangerous and unsafe, eventually these strings were replaced with iron.

In 1852 Elisha Otis Introduced the safety brake on an elevator, which would prevent the lift car from falling if the cable broke, he demonstrated this in a presentation at an exhibition in 1854. he put the first passenger lift in 488 Broadway, New York City on 23 March 1857.

You can read more about the history of lifts here

Fast forward to 2024 and lifts are very different, they are much safer, more efficient, more reliable and the technology is better, lifts still go wrong of course but we can sort any lift problems and provide an excellent level of customer service.

If you have any issues with your lifts, please contact us so we can assist you. We aim to respond within 24 hours. Our office number is 01782 562000, or you can email us at info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk.

lift modernisation

Lift Modernisation And Why You Should Consider It

A Lift Modernisation (or a Lift Refurbishment) is the process of upgrading or changing major parts of an existing lift, think of it as like a big lift repair. A Lift Refurbishment can improve the performance of the lift and make it more reliable. we recommend them on old lifts as a lot of them may not comply with safety and disability standards, refurbishing the lift can solve this issue however as well as fixing any other problems.

One of the biggest lift modernisation projects was in 1891 in Birmingham Victoria Square by Colin Craney. We have done many successful lift modernisations ourselves for example in May we did a lift modernisation for a stoke care home, where we gave your average lift an upgrade. as part of this project we turned the doors into a telephone box and upgraded the parts, all while causing minimal disruption with the outcome of a happy client.

This is an option you should consider if you have an old lift, if your lift is new we recommend a lift service or lift repair. Here are some reasons why you should consider a lift modernisation.

Minimal Disruption For Your Business – This type of lift project causes little disruption, instead of going through the hassle of taking the lift out and putting a new one in, we simply replace the parts, this doesn’t take as long and causes a lot less disruption to your business.

Quick to install – We can normally get a lift upgrade installed within a week, parts normally take around 3 weeks from when we order them. typically a new lift can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Environmentally friendly – In a world where being eco-friendly is important, we can say a lift modernisation is environmentally friendly because we are using old parts of a lift and replacing them rather than putting in a new lift altogether. The Lift is kept where it is but we put new parts in and improve it.

Cost Effective – This type of lift project is cost-effective as you wouldn’t need to pay to put the new lift in and instead you pay for the parts and time on site, it also will mean we won’t need to repair it for a while or as much, as old lifts often need repairs more, with this being said it will save you money in the long run.

Improved Interior and up to standards – A Lift Modernisation will make your lift interior look nicer, because who doesn’t want that? we have had some really creative ones in the past and we allow the client to choose what design they want and put their creative spin on it. they can also put the lift up to standard as lift laws and regulations have changed over the years and a lift that is 15+ years old may not follow these rules, as part of the process we will get the lift in line with today’s standards.

Nationwide Lift Services also offer the full turn key package for our clients for existing sites and new buildings. We offer the complete lift removal service, associated builders-work and electrical work, as well as the lift replacement. This allows us to be involved from early design phase right through to handover on site. By having one contractor on site, this cuts down on interfacing with other trades, improves communication and ultimately the level of service. We can even offer lift shafts nationwide to save time and money.

Sponsorship With Dougie Mac

We have recently started a sponsorship deal with Dougie Mac, Dougie Mac are a local charity and good friends of ours. we have worked with them before so to have a sponsorship is a pleasure. One of our engineers did a run for them, you can read about this here. we have also done their lifts before and we look after them.

Dougie Mac provides specialist care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. Dedicated staff and volunteers help local people of all ages get the right care, in the right place, at the right time, while supporting their families, friends and carers too.

Dougie Mac offers a holistic approach to care, addressing physical, emotional, and psychological needs or its patients. Their services include symptom management and end-of-life care through their inpatient facilities, which offer a supportive environment for patients needing round-the-clock care.

The hospice also offers a wide range of wellbeing services, for inpatient and community patients, which include support services and techniques to help alleviate some of the worries and concerns associated with a palliative illness.

Dougie Mac’s Community services extend the hospice’s reach by providing care and support directly in patients’ homes. This includes visits from nurses and healthcare professionals who ensure that patients receive consistent and comprehensive care in their home.

The hospice also offers bereavement support, providing emotional and practical help to families and loved ones. This support is crucial in helping families cope with their loss and adjust to life after their loved one has passed.

Additionally, Dougie Mac is dedicated to education and training, offering programs for healthcare professionals and the community to enhance the quality of palliative and end-of-life care. This commitment to education helps ensure that high standards of care are maintained and that more people are aware of the importance of palliative care.

All these services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. This year it will cost in excess of £20 million to run and develop Dougie Mac’s full range of services for local people, 75% of this amount is funded by voluntary donations from our local community.
