Maintaining your lift

Maintaining Your Lift – How Often, The Legalities and More

Maintaining Your Lift – An Introduction

Maintaining your lift is important, especially when people use them often. A lift maintenance is when an engineer visits a site to investigate the lift, this may be for a problem or just a general check to make sure the lift is safe and works properly. We can do lift maintenance for you and your company; we have been doing it for over 30 years and we have an array of loyal customers and good clients. Our reliable and efficient engineers are experts in their field and as a well-respected lift company we understand how maintaining your lift is necessary.

We carry out lift maintenance for care homes, colleges, retail companies, private hospitals and other customers, If a lift breakdown occurs you must arrange a lift service visit as soon as possible, we have a 24/7 helpline you can call and we work around the clock to attend site and fix your lift, lift service visits can make the event of a lift breakdown less likely.

The Legalities

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 or LOLER Regulations states that all lifts must be examined and inspected on a regular basis, a qualified engineer must service the lift to make sure it is safe and in line with the regulations. This applies to all types of lifts, including passenger lifts, goods lifts, dumbwaiters, and hoists.

If you fail to service your lift in line with the regulations you can face a fine, prosecution or you plus your company can be taken to court and sued, so maintaining your lift regularly is extremely important. You or the lift company can also be held liable if a lift breaks down or if someone is injured or dies during a trap-in. At Nationwide Lift Services we know that maintaining your lift and making the lift safe, getting it to work at its full potential and getting people out of a trapped lift is paramount.

LOLER Inspections

A LOLER statutory inspection is legally required to assure that your lift is in line with safety standards. A qualified engineer completes a thorough examination of your lift. The engineer will check the lift against safety criteria, which includes:

  • The condition and state of all mechanical and technical parts
  • The level of wear and tear;
  • Compliance with all relevant safety standards;
  • Any potential areas of improvement.

Once this inspection is complete, you will be handed a report detailing the engineer’s findings. If any problems are found on this inspection, you will be advised on what needs to be done to set them right. For a goods lift LOLER inspections are carried out every 12 months while as for a passenger lift it is normally every 6 months. We can help you with LOLER inspections and get you on the right track.

Our Recommendations and Why We Think This

Maintaining your lift is mandatory but how often should it be serviced/maintained? We recommend that you get your lift maintained every 3 months. We believe in being proactive and fixing faults and getting your lift maintained regularly assists in preventing lift breakdowns and trap ins before they happen, this saves money and reduces disruption while also minimizing faults and accidents.

Conclusion

Maintaining your lift is something we specialise in and we cant stress enough that it is important, can save you money plus the grief of a breakdown and prevents faults, accidents, and trap ins.

history of lifts

History Of Lifts

The History of lifts is an interesting topic, Lifts are technology the average person uses almost everyday without thinking about it, to put it into numbers there are roughly 325 million elevator trips per day worldwide, that is a lot of lifting and moving people. Whether its in a local care home, a huge shopping centre, your place of work or a college just down the road, lifts are everywhere.

Lifts have been around for centuries and they have an interesting history. The earliest known lift was made in 236 BC by Archimedes in Roman times. back then lifts were made using hemp rope and powered by animals or people; a huge difference to the modern lift. Throughout history, lifts improved as construction and technology advanced, until they became what we see today.

In the pre-industrial era, lifts were very different. In the year 1000, there was a contraption similar to a lift that was used to raise a battering ram to destroy a fortress in Islamic Spain.

In 1743 a passenger lift, called the ‘flying chair’, was made, The lift was installed outside the King Louis XV balcony at the Chateau de Versailles and was operated by hand.

In 1793, the first screw drive lift was created by Ivan Kulibin and installed in the Winter Palace. This marked a significant step in lift history.

In the Industrial Revolution lifts were used in coal mines to move people and large quantities of coal from the cave and to the surface, lifts were moved with string which was considered dangerous and unsafe, eventually these strings were replaced with iron.

In 1852 Elisha Otis Introduced the safety brake on an elevator, which would prevent the lift car from falling if the cable broke, he demonstrated this in a presentation at an exhibition in 1854. he put the first passenger lift in 488 Broadway, New York City on 23 March 1857.

You can read more about the history of lifts here

Fast forward to 2024 and lifts are very different, they are much safer, more efficient, more reliable and the technology is better, lifts still go wrong of course but we can sort any lift problems and provide an excellent level of customer service.

lift modernisation

Lift Modernisation And Why You Should Consider It

A Lift Modernisation (or a Lift Refurbishment) is the process of upgrading or changing major parts of an existing lift, think of it as like a big lift repair. A Lift Refurbishment can improve the performance of the lift and make it more reliable. we recommend them on old lifts as a lot of them may not comply with safety and disability standards, refurbishing the lift can solve this issue however as well as fixing any other problems.

One of the biggest lift modernisation projects was in 1891 in Birmingham Victoria Square by Colin Craney. We have done many successful lift modernisations ourselves for example in May we did a lift modernisation for a stoke care home, where we gave your average lift an upgrade. as part of this project we turned the doors into a telephone box and upgraded the parts, all while causing minimal disruption with the outcome of a happy client.

This is an option you should consider if you have an old lift, if your lift is new we recommend a lift service or lift repair. Here are some reasons why you should consider a lift modernisation.

Minimal Disruption For Your Business – This type of lift project causes little disruption, instead of going through the hassle of taking the lift out and putting a new one in, we simply replace the parts, this doesn’t take as long and causes a lot less disruption to your business.

Quick to install – We can normally get a lift upgrade installed within a week, parts normally take around 3 weeks from when we order them. typically a new lift can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

Environmentally friendly – In a world where being eco-friendly is important, we can say a lift modernisation is environmentally friendly because we are using old parts of a lift and replacing them rather than putting in a new lift altogether. The Lift is kept where it is but we put new parts in and improve it.

Cost Effective – This type of lift project is cost-effective as you wouldn’t need to pay to put the new lift in and instead you pay for the parts and time on site, it also will mean we won’t need to repair it for a while or as much, as old lifts often need repairs more, with this being said it will save you money in the long run.

Improved Interior and up to standards – A Lift Modernisation will make your lift interior look nicer, because who doesn’t want that? we have had some really creative ones in the past and we allow the client to choose what design they want and put their creative spin on it. they can also put the lift up to standard as lift laws and regulations have changed over the years and a lift that is 15+ years old may not follow these rules, as part of the process we will get the lift in line with today’s standards.

Nationwide Lift Services also offer the full turn key package for our clients for existing sites and new buildings. We offer the complete lift removal service, associated builders-work and electrical work, as well as the lift replacement. This allows us to be involved from early design phase right through to handover on site. By having one contractor on site, this cuts down on interfacing with other trades, improves communication and ultimately the level of service. We can even offer lift shafts nationwide to save time and money.

One of our engineers did a run for them, you can read about this here. we have also done their lifts before and we look after them.

Dougie Mac provides specialist care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. Dedicated staff and volunteers help local people of all ages get the right care, in the right place, at the right time, while supporting their families, friends and carers too.

Dougie Mac offers a holistic approach to care, addressing physical, emotional, and psychological needs or its patients. Their services include symptom management and end-of-life care through their inpatient facilities, which offer a supportive environment for patients needing round-the-clock care.

The hospice also offers a wide range of wellbeing services, for inpatient and community patients, which include support services and techniques to help alleviate some of the worries and concerns associated with a palliative illness.

Dougie Mac’s Community services extend the hospice’s reach by providing care and support directly in patients’ homes. This includes visits from nurses and healthcare professionals who ensure that patients receive consistent and comprehensive care in their home.

The hospice also offers bereavement support, providing emotional and practical help to families and loved ones. This support is crucial in helping families cope with their loss and adjust to life after their loved one has passed.

Additionally, Dougie Mac is dedicated to education and training, offering programs for healthcare professionals and the community to enhance the quality of palliative and end-of-life care. This commitment to education helps ensure that high standards of care are maintained and that more people are aware of the importance of palliative care.

All these services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. This year it will cost in excess of £20 million to run and develop Dougie Mac’s full range of services for local people, 75% of this amount is funded by voluntary donations from our local community.
