Five Cornerstones

Five Cornerstones of Our Business

Are you a fan of the band Five? If so, we bet you are ecstatic about the news of their grand comeback. They dominated the charts in the early 2000s and they were everywhere.

In addition to the music, turns out they also love lifts, a bonus. Now, maybe they are not as lift-mad as us, but it is still cool to see.

Our Office Manager Nicola Shelley is going to see them live. Who knows, potentially we will win the maintenance contract for their mansions (if only).

Five are another bunch of famous musicians who are lift savvy, alongside Taylor Lift, Kendrick Lift-mar or even Emin-elevator.

Nationwide have been in the lift industry for well over 30 years. Our masterful engineers use their expert skills to get lifts sounding their best, to us, the sound of an efficient lift is a symphony of pure success. In that aspect, we are like the five of the lift industry. Speaking of Five, here are the 5 cornerstones of our business.

Anticipative lift service with an emphasis on efficiency.
Superlative lift repair with an aim to fix on the first site visit.
Resourceful Lift Modernisation with a focus on quality.
Swift and honest approach to lift breakdowns.
Jaw-droppingly good assistance with your LOLERS.

Bet you didn’t notice the first letter of each cornerstone was an initial for each Five member, did you?

Here’s an edited video of Five promoting us (credit to their TikTok account).

When it comes to lifts, we believe we are the one for (four) you, which we are confident will equal five-star customer service.

If you are having issues with your lifts, get in touch. Don’t wait until there’s a problem, we can assist you.

cost-effective lift solution

Cost-Effective Lift Solution: Lift Modernisation

Is your lift old and riddled with constant problems? Perhaps a lift modernisation is the best cost-effective lift solution for you. During a lift modernisation, we replace and upgrade all old or outdated parts. This is an excellent solution for lifts over 15 years old and can vastly improve efficiency as well as ensuring the lift is reliable. Any lift with an age exceeding 15 years old can be subject to an increased chance of lift breakdowns or may malfunction more frequently, a lift modernisation can fix this, however.

A lift modernisation is a magnificent method to minimize the chance of breakdowns, and the efficiency it brings is unparalleled. When you are not wanting the upheaval of a full lift replacement, a lift refurbishment solution from us is a splendid idea. All parts we fit are open protocol and replacements can be sourced from reliable UK suppliers, ensuring swift delivery even in the event of an emergency.

As well as being efficient, lift modernisations are also extremely cost-effective as you wouldn’t need to pay for the installation of a new lift, instead, you pay for the parts and time spent on site. This type of lift solution will save you money in the long run.

In addition to lift modernisations being a cost-effective lift solution, they are also eco-friendly. A lift modernisation is environmentally friendly because instead of installing an entirely new lift, we upgrade all parts of it. The Lift is kept where it is, but we put new parts in and improve it.

We can offer lift controller replacements, lift interior upgrades, hydraulic replacements, door upgrades or replacement lift doors. We can typically get your lift fully refurbished with a new interior and all components in 4 weeks.

Furthermore, we can offer different cost-efficient lift solutions. If you are experiencing problems, please get in contact as we can assist you with any lift issues.

nursing home lift

Motor Room

Motor Room in Winter: The Problems

As the winter months approach, it can cause a whole host of problems for lifts. It is important to know how to keep your lift motor room at the right temperature. A lift motor room should ideally be kept at 20 degrees. Chilly weather can lower the temperature, potentially leading to issues such as improper hydraulic fluid consistency. Here are some common problems caused by cold temperatures and how to solve them:

Reduced efficiency of lift components:
Hydraulic systems may experience thickened hydraulic fluid, causing sluggish performance or delayed responses. Electric motors may struggle to start if lubrication becomes less effective in colder temperatures, warming up the motor room is essential.

Increased wear and tear:
Chilly conditions can make oil or grease more viscous, reducing lubrication and increasing wear on gears, bearings, and rollers. Rubber or plastic parts may become brittle, leading to cracking.

Electrical problems:
Fluctuating temperatures can cause condensation on electrical components, increasing the risk of short circuits or corrosion. Battery performance or capacity may also decrease in cold conditions. Keeping the motor room at 20 degrees is important.

Control system failures:
Temperature-sensitive electronics in modern lifts may malfunction if the ambient temperature drops below their operational range. Sensors and relays may fail, resulting in miscommunication or false error signals.

Health and safety risks:
Lift engineers may struggle to work in a cold motor room, impacting the quality of repairs or routine checks. Cold-related failures could also lead to lift downtime, inconveniencing users and posing potential safety hazards.

Solutions

  • Install air con systems to maintain a consistent temperature in the motor room (ideally 20c).
  • Ensure the motor room has the correct air flow and flow to fresh air.
  • Use proper insulation to help stabilise the temperature range.
  • Schedule regular maintenance during colder months to address potential issues proactively.
  • Monitor the environment with temperature and humidity sensors to track the motor room’s climate.

Contact us if you are having any winter related lift issues.

risk assessments

Risk Assessments for your lifts

At Nationwide Lifts, we have been working closely with care homes and the NHS for many years. We understand how important it is to ensure the lifts are reliable and efficient in these critical sectors. We also understand the importance of completed risk assessments.

Often in some older care sector sites, the designers never considered a second lift or stairlift as a backup plan in case the lift went off. Our plan is to ensure we spot the future issues before they occur. Thorough risk assessments frequently help achieve safer working conditions and ensure the lift is safe.

We offer free full risk assessments every year on every site we look after. So we would look at all components and parts to ensure that all upgrades and replacements are done when required. We work closely with clients on this to ensure they have minimal downtime for the lift on site.

In the lift industry, maintenance can be rushed due to low costs that the industry charge, but we try to be different and offer this comprehensive solution. It works, and we help to reduce breakdowns on all sites.

We have worked with some key players of the care industry, delivering them exceptional service, and saving them costs on repairs. If you are a care home manager who gets busy, the last thing we would want is for you to have problems with your lifts.

We understand there are several challenges involved within the care industry. The safety and mobility of residents, many with limited physical abilities, is paramount. We are aware reliability of lifts may be a concern of yours, as efficient lifts are necessary for transporting residents between floors. With our approach to lift maintenance and comprehensive risk assessments, we aim to prevent all future lift issues for your care home.

Frequent lift breakdowns can lead to delays in care, increased risk of accidents, and less independence for residents, something we’re sure you don’t want. Regular and proactive lift maintenance can minimize these difficulties and put you at ease by ensuring that lifts are always in operation, reducing the risk of accidents, and improving the overall efficiency of care delivery. This not only enhances the safety and well-being of residents but also eases the workload of care staff, allowing them to focus more on providing quality care. Please contact us if you are having issues with your lifts.

Old Lift

Old Lift Map or Treasure? That is the Question.

One of our engineers recently discovered what appeared to be a treasure map, sparking a lot of curiosity. Could this map lead to ancient, hidden treasures? Or perhaps to an underground city lost in time? As it turns out, this intriguing find was actually a planning map for a lift installed in 1970—making it an impressive 54 years old. The lift was originally installed by Bennie Lifts Limited, a company founded in 1934, which has since gone into liquidation. This old lift map has quite a history.

Finding this old lift map was fascinating; it looked like something straight out of a pirate movie! But it’s just one of the many interesting things we’ve come across during our years of repairing lifts.

In over 30 years of service, we’ve worked on hundreds of lifts, both old and new, and encountered all sorts of unusual sights—like lift pits filled with cutlery (they certainly had to “fork” out for that!) or vintage lift maps. Through it all, we’ve maintained our commitment to providing excellent customer service and focusing on fixing issues on the first visit to save you money on repairs. Among the most intriguing finds was the old lift map.

We also offer traditional lift maintenance, where our engineers spend extra time on site, thoroughly inspecting for both minor and major issues, helping to prevent costly future repairs. Our team has seen a variety of lift maps, some quite old.

If you have an old lift, we recommend a lift modernisation. Feel free to keep the old lift map somewhere! We would love to see it.

If you manage care homes, schools, colleges, or NHS facilities and find yourself dealing with frequent lift issues, reach out to us. We have extensive experience working with both large care home groups and individual homes, so you’re in safe hands with us as your lift service provider. We understand the critical importance of reliable lift operation for your staff, residents, and visitors, and we are dedicated to keeping your lifts running smoothly while minimising costs. If you happen to find an old lift map in your facility, let us know!

history of lifts

History Of Lifts

The History of lifts is an interesting topic, Lifts are technology the average person uses almost everyday without thinking about it, to put it into numbers there are roughly 325 million elevator trips per day worldwide, that is a lot of lifting and moving people. Whether its in a local care home, a huge shopping centre, your place of work or a college just down the road, lifts are everywhere.

Lifts have been around for centuries and they have an interesting history. The earliest known lift was made in 236 BC by Archimedes in Roman times. back then lifts were made using hemp rope and powered by animals or people; a huge difference to the modern lift. Throughout history, lifts improved as construction and technology advanced, until they became what we see today.

In the pre-industrial era, lifts were very different. In the year 1000, there was a contraption similar to a lift that was used to raise a battering ram to destroy a fortress in Islamic Spain.

In 1743 a passenger lift, called the ‘flying chair’, was made, The lift was installed outside the King Louis XV balcony at the Chateau de Versailles and was operated by hand.

In 1793, the first screw drive lift was created by Ivan Kulibin and installed in the Winter Palace. This marked a significant step in lift history.

In the Industrial Revolution lifts were used in coal mines to move people and large quantities of coal from the cave and to the surface, lifts were moved with string which was considered dangerous and unsafe, eventually these strings were replaced with iron.

In 1852 Elisha Otis Introduced the safety brake on an elevator, which would prevent the lift car from falling if the cable broke, he demonstrated this in a presentation at an exhibition in 1854. he put the first passenger lift in 488 Broadway, New York City on 23 March 1857.

You can read more about the history of lifts here

Fast forward to 2024 and lifts are very different, they are much safer, more efficient, more reliable and the technology is better, lifts still go wrong of course but we can sort any lift problems and provide an excellent level of customer service.

If you have any issues with your lifts, please contact us so we can assist you. We aim to respond within 24 hours. Our office number is 01782 562000, or you can email us at info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk.

The hospice also offers a wide range of wellbeing services, for inpatient and community patients, which include support services and techniques to help alleviate some of the worries and concerns associated with a palliative illness.

lift professional

Lift Professional

Nationwide Lift Services are a Lift Company who are known throughout the UK as a Lift Professional. We deal with many clients in the care home sector, retail, and NHS.

Right from the days when Brian started the business over the 30 years ago to the new generation now, we strive for a close working relationship with customers and giving good service.

Recently we had a meeting with Shorts Industries, we thank them for being a reliable supplier and for good customer service.

New Employee

Michael Robinson has recently joined the business in the sales team and his aim is to become a lift professional soon like the older staff. He has worked on news stories for Nationwide Lift Services before and has done work for us a year ago for work experience, but now he is here to stay.

We even had a recent visit from Ted’s little ones who have the buzz to become true Lift Legends like their dad, even at such a young age. Hopefully one day they will also become employees at Nationwide Lifts.

At Nationwide Lifts we have a close team of staff who really care about doing a good job for the business and our customers. Our owner Ken Chappell said “It is unique to have such a young team of lift professionals who really care about the company and our customers. The offices and engineers in Staffordshire and surrounding areas work closely together and always on hand to help each other and our customers”.

care home lift specialist

Care Home Lift Specialist

Nationwide Lifts are a care home lift specialist and have built an outstanding reputation as a reliable supplier for the care home industry and the NHS. We understand the importance that lifts have in a care home and reducing downtime is very important.

Our local lift engineers are highly trained on all types of lifts in care homes and aim to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Our engineers are trained to find the root cause of the problem and not just to reset the lift and turn it back on. Our plan is to ensure the lift is reliable for the long term to save our clients downtime and also costs on breakdowns.

As a care home lift specialist we understand the importance of having a functional working lift for your care home. We believe in fixing problems before they happen, our highly trained engineers will spend more time on site and identify and fix problems before they happen, this prevents entrapment and breakdowns in the short and long term.

For sites where downtime is key, say in an existing care home where the lift is crucial we can offer a lift modernisation. Care homes often have lifts that are old and in need of lift upgrade work. We can deliver and install a new control system, all associated wiring and controls within 3 weeks from order. We can also offer new lift interiors, lift door upgrades and like with new lifts, we can do any associated building or electrical work. A lift modernisation or lift upgrade is a great solution to make your lift more efficient, faster, safer and more reliable.

We make sure to have excellent customer service at all times. Our customer service is 24/7 and calls are always answered by a member of the Nationwide Lift Services team, not a out of hours call centre.

If you have any problem lifts at your care home (lifts that repeatedly go wrong) please contact us on 01782562000 or info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk

Lift Phone Upgrade

BT Openreach are currently in the process of changing their network through the “Fibre First” programme which affects a lift phone and aims to provide fibre broadband to three million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2020. BT’s current objective is to provide fibre connections to all buildings and for these to replace the current lines by 2025.

Alarm devices (or lift phones) in lifts are a legal requirement and they require two way means of communication. This means that passengers can call the rescue service via a lift phone (autodialler) if an entrapment occurs. The rescue service can reassure a trapped passenger and schedule a competent person to attend site and release the trapped passengers. Lift phones traditionally work through PTSN (Public Switched Telephone Network) but with the network changes BT are implementing this will no longer be possible.

The best solution is to install a GSM (Global System for Mobiles) this eliminates the need for a fixed landline, making it more efficient. Where GSM units are installed, they will work like normal

Global System for Mobiles (GSM) type devices to eliminate the need for a fixed landline. Where GSM units are fitted, they will continue to operate as normal following the changeover, but those auto-diallers using a landline will be impacted.

Stop Horsing Around Lads

Our engineers have been with us for many years but I keep telling them to “stop horsing around lads”.

Whilst on a visit at a care home in Stoke, we noticed a pony on site for horse therapy for patients. What a lovely idea and something the residents love as you can imagine. Steve and Neil could not resist in taking a photo with the pony which is now on our photo wall in the office.

We also do lift maintenance, lift repairs, lift modernisation and breakdowns for all types of lifts throughout the UK (not just horses). Please call us on 01782562000 or info@nationwideliftservices.co.uk if you need some help.

lift pit

Forking Hell – Lift Pit Clean

We have just attended a call-out for a new retail site and found all these knives and forks in the lift pit. Clearly the previous service provider never cleaned the lift pit over a long period of time.

This lift is a service lift for a restaurant and due to no car doors being fitted, cutlery has fallen down the shaft in travel. Lift doors even on a small service lift are a good idea to cut down on issues like this and potential breakdowns.

We pride ourselves on doing traditional lift maintenance for all our customers which helps cut down on problems by fully accessing the lift. We look after many retail lifts throughout the UK.

Baby Frank

Baby Frank on Nationwide Lifts Visit

Sian Booth our service and repairs co-ordinator came to visit the team this week with her new addition to her family Baby Frank. We are not sure Frank loves Lifts like the rest of us just yet as he slept through most of his visit.

It was great to see Sian and her new baby boy, making Frank our 3rd work / staff baby in 3 years.

All the office girls loved to see baby Frank and he seemed to the love attention but Brad and Paul soon disappeared when it was nappy changing time.

The Care Home Lifts Owners Are Talking About

As every care and support team recognises, safety in care facilities is paramount at all times. This means that ensuring your lift products are manufactured, installed, refurbished and repaired by a reputable company with experience in the sector.

Nationwide Lift Services was established more than 30 years ago and have developed and consistently built upon its strong presence in care home lifts. The management team has more than 100 years of collective experience in the industry and the business now offers the perfect solution to the care home industry with the “Home Lift“.

The Care Home Lift Offering Quality and Versatility

With quality at the forefront of the installation and lift refurbishment procedures at Nationwide Lift Services, exhaustive studies have been carried out to ensure that the “Home Lift” is of the highest quality and aligns with all relevant industry regulations. This includes advanced entrance detection systems, car levelling, and door reopening, as well as innovative rescue systems that allow the lift to be evacuated should a power failure occur.

The versatility of this product makes care home lifts ideal, as it can be customised to suit the unique needs of every care or residential home. For example, there are a number of different automatic door options, including primed stainless steel, full glass doors with a stainless steel frame, and folding bus doors with a large vision panel. Alternatively, there are several semi-automatic door options available, including those with a standard vision panel or a large vision panel, depending on the unique needs of your care facility.

The car operating panels can also be tailored to suit the needs of each residential home, nursing home or care setting, with numerous panel options as well as handrail types with easily accessible operating buttons. Similarly, there are several different indicator options, including directional arrows, surface-mounted panels and even retro-style designs.

Consultation and Nursing Home Lift Installation

Nationwide Lift Services has experience in getting involved in projects early on in the process and can deliver the extra level of care and service that your project may require. As such, we can provide everything from designs and drawings to specifications, free tenders and site surveys, BREEAM information, budget costs, and traffic calculations when necessary.

Additionally, as we work with our own team of directly employed engineers, independent testers, and lift partners, we can guarantee that every part of the installation process consistently delivers the same level of care and attention to ensure your project progresses smoothly throughout. This also means that we are able to offer a range of other complementary services, including the removal of old lift products, electrical work, scaffolding and fall gates, and lifting beams. Our complete care home lift installation solution also includes the supply and installation of new lift shafts, should your project require this service.

Nursing Home Lift Maintenance and Repair

From preventative lift maintenance to more involved lift refurbishment projects, Hi-Tec Lift Systems offers a nationwide program of services to ensure that your nursing home lift products are performing optimally at all times. We are also able to carry out LOLER inspections, which will ensure that your lifting equipment is fit for purpose, suitably marked, and has up-to-date examination records.

This comprehensive program of services has been designed to help your care facility minimise callouts and breakdowns. Packages can be tailored to suit your unique needs, including standard contracts and more comprehensive solutions for a range of products, such as step lifts, chain-driven lifts and hoists, cabin lifts, platform lifts, and more.
